What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?
If the switch no longer controls the light but the light stays on, the switch may have failed in the “on” position or the fixture is getting power from another always‑hot feed. Loose or overheating connections at the switch or in a junction box can also cause this. Miswired or failing 3‑way switches are common, too. First Call Jewel routinely tests GFCI/AFCI devices, tightens panel and device connections, and inspects wiring to find the fault.
Quick checks:
- Try any other switches that control that light.
- Turn off the breaker if you notice heat or buzzing.
